     Tribune

[under development]

Earlier this year Chicago-based Tribune Group absorbed the Los Angeles Times-Mirror group.

The empire extends across newspaper and magazine publishing, online services, sports teams, printing and directories, television and radio broadcasting and production, and property. It's currently disposing of some interests, notably through sale of the Times-Mirror magazines to AOL Time Warner.

The Tribune Group, centred around the Chicago Tribune, was given a kick-start by funds from Cyrus McCormick - the robber baron who built International Harvester. His family - devoutly right wing (notoriously isolationist in the 1930s and 40's) ran the company until late last century.

Arguably the best biography is The Colonel: The Life & Legend of Robert McCormick 1880-1955 (Boston, Houghton Mifflin 97) by Richard Norton Smith. Cissy: The Extraordinary Life of Eleanor Medill Patterson (New York, Simon & Schuster 98) by Ralph Merkin deals with the Colonel's equally zany niece. Print historian John Tebbel's An American Dynasty (Westport, Greenwood 68) is unfortunately out of print. Joseph Gies in The Colonel of Chicago (New York, Dutton 79) and Lloyd Wendt in The Chicago Tribune: The Rise Of A Great American Newspaper (Chicago, Rand McNally 79) buff the legend.

Times-Mirror, centred on the Los Angeles Times, enjoyed power on the US west coast equivalent to that of Fairfax in Australia.

David Halberstam's classic The Powers That Be (New York, Knopf 79) is a picture by the leading US journalist of the Washington Post, CBS, New York Times and LA Times at the peak of the 'television age'.

It's greatly superior to the profile of the Chandlers and the LA Times in the more recent Paper Tigers (London, Heinemann 93) by Nicholas Coleridge and Robert Gottlieb's Thinking Big: The Story of the LA Times (New York, Dutton, 77).
