Andrew Odlyzko's superb The history of communications and its implications for the Internet (PDF) reports that the number of items carried by the US mail service rose from 0.8 million in 1790 to 155 million in 1850, 7,130 million in 1900, 45,000 million in 1950 and 207,882 in 2000. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) reports that globally some 425 billion items were carried domestically in 2002, with 28 'industrialised' countries accounting for over 80% of that traffic. 6.7 billion items were carried across national borders.
