Ed Paulson's Inside Cisco: The Real Story of Supercharged M&A Growth (Wiley: New York 2001) portrays the "new goliath". Young David, come on down! We thought that Economic Action Does Not Take Place in a Vacuum: Understanding Cisco's Acquisition and Development Strategy (PDF), a 2002 paper by David Mayer & Martin Kenney, was more perceptive.
